What if every Sandstorm bag carried a little bit of sunshine?
It’s something we’ve been thinking about lately, because now, in a way, they do.
Our factory runs on solar power. The same sunlight that floods our workshop every morning now keeps our machines running ; from the clicker press that cuts the leather to the final stitch that finishes every bag.
A few months ago, we installed a 40 kWp solar PV system, and the difference has been remarkable. Not just in energy, but in spirit. There’s something satisfying about knowing that the work of our hands is powered by the same sun that warms them.
Here’s what that looks like in numbers:
-
More than 58,000 kWh of clean energy every year
-
About KES 1.8 million saved in annual energy costs
-
Nearly 70 metric tons of CO₂ avoided, roughly the same as keeping 12 acres of forest alive for a year, or recharging 8 million smartphones using clean energy
We couldn’t have done it alone; our partners at ICO Power – ESCO helped make the switch smooth and seamless.
For us, it’s more than just saving energy. It’s about staying true to what Sandstorm stands for: thoughtful craft, responsible choices, and a deep connection to this place we call home.
So the next time you carry a Sandstorm bag, remember it’s crafted by Kenyan hands, and now, powered by the sun.
